According to Professor John Hattie, author of Visible Learning, the biggest social and emotional issue facing schools today is boredom. And boredom, he argues, is not simply about restlessness—it’s about a lack of challenge.
Hattie’s research shows that around 40–50% of what children are taught in school is content they already know. Add to that the fact that in many classrooms, the teacher does most of the talking, and it becomes clear why so many students switch off.
The truth is simple: the one who does the talking, does the learning. When children get to articulate their ideas, discuss with peers, and test their thinking in real situations, they grow. When they are passive listeners, they don’t.

At Silvermist Academy, we take this insight to heart. We design our days so that children are constantly challenged—not with meaningless busywork, but with real-world problem-solving, meaningful projects, and practical skills that stretch their minds and bodies.
Our students know what they are good at, where they need to grow, and how to improve. They are never bored, because every day they can see themselves making progress.

This past week is a perfect example.
City Navigation & Research
Our students set off on the MyCiTi bus to the Central Library. They had to figure out routes, timings, and logistics—skills most adults still find daunting! Once at the library, they searched for books to support their garden project, practicing information literacy and resourcefulness.
Outdoor Reflection
From there, they strolled to the historic Company’s Garden, where they took time to connect with nature, feed the birds, and reflect on their discoveries. This blend of academic and experiential learning makes the knowledge stick.
When Life Gives You Lemons…
As if that wasn’t enough adventure, the children were gifted over 100 lemons. Rather than simply taking them home, they turned the gift into a challenge: how can we use this abundance together? The answer? Learn how to build a fire, work as a team, and brew fresh lemon cordial over the flames. What could have been a simple snack became a lesson in teamwork, resilience, and creativity.

Purposeful Learning, Every Day: For us, this is what education should look like. Children challenged, stretched, and deeply engaged—not passively absorbing information they already know, but living their learning.
As Professor Hattie reminds us, students thrive when they are challenged and given ownership of their growth. That’s why, at Silvermist Academy, boredom has no place. Instead, our learners are busy building the skills, confidence, and curiosity they need to flourish in life.
