Our Learning Philosophy
We foster a community of learners where everyone contributes—students, parents, and educators alike. We believe learning is most effective when we work together, sharing our knowledge and skills in a flexible, supportive environment. Each learner charts their own path, empowered to direct their education based on their interests and goals. We also recognize that the parent is the first teacher, and we, as educators, are the second. Our curriculum is designed to provide hands-on, practical learning experiences that equip students with skills for the real world:
- Gardening & Bushcraft
Learn the art of sustainable living through nature. From growing your own food to mastering survival skills, students gain hands-on experience working with the land. - African Music (Drumming, Singing, and Gumboot Dancing)
Discover the rich cultural heritage of Africa through its music. Students will learn traditional drumming, singing, and the lively art of gumboot dancing. - Cooking (Indoor and Outdoor)
Learn essential cooking skills through our hands-on culinary programs. Whether over an open flame or in the kitchen, students explore the art of food preparation. - Art in Afrikaans
Combine creativity with language learning. This unique course offers conversational Afrikaans classes centered around artistic expression, helping students learn the language through creativity. - Young Hearts Big Dreams
A volunteer organization founded and managed by the students of Silvermist Academy. This project, driven by our learners, allows students to make a real impact on their community through service and leadership. - Young Entrepreneurs
At Silvermist, every student is given the opportunity to start and run their own business for a year. They will develop essential entrepreneurial skills such as brand development, marketing, and business management. - Media Skills
We believe in the power of media to tell important stories. Our students learn photography, basic filming, and video editing, preparing them to capture and share their own narratives. We are proud to be part of Upschool’s Good News Network, where our students regularly report on positive events. These reports are showcased to an international audience, helping students become global storytellers. - Mechanics
We offer unique learning opportunities with our farm mechanic, who introduces all students to the basics of cars. From understanding different car parts to learning basic vehicle maintenance, students will develop essential life skills that are often overlooked in traditional schooling.
City Schooling
At Silvermist Academy, we believe that the classroom extends beyond the school grounds. Our City Schooling sessions take learning into the heart of the city, using urban environments as a classroom. These regular trips offer students the chance to explore museums, public spaces, markets, and historical landmarks, blending real-world experiences with academic learning. Students will gain insight into how cities function and how they can apply what they learn to various aspects of their own lives.
Flexi Model of Education
Silvermist Academy offers a flexible learning model. Students can opt to participate in our practical skills courses while completing their academic work at home through online platforms. We understand that every child learns differently, and our Flexi Model allows students to create a tailored educational experience.
Students can choose which courses they want to participate in and are asked to commit to their choice for a term. This system promotes responsibility and independence, key tenets of self-directed learning. It also gives students the freedom to explore new skills and interests at their own pace.
A Learning Community
We are a community where learning is a shared experience. Parents are encouraged to contribute their skills and talents by leading workshops or sessions, and students often take the lead as well, facilitating peer learning opportunities. At Silvermist Academy, everyone has something to teach, and everyone has something to learn.
Additionally, we regularly welcome worldschoolers—students who are traveling the world while learning. This gives us the opportunity to engage with children from different cultures, right here in our environment, enriching our understanding of the global community and providing unique cross-cultural learning experiences.
